CNS stimulants are drugs which increase the muscular and the mental activities. The two most common stimulants are psychomotor stimulants and hallucinogens. Methylxanthines are alkaloids that can be found in high concentrations in tea, coffee, and chocolate. Theophilline, theobromine, and caffeine are the most popular.
Nicotine is the active ingredient in tobacco and is the second most widely used CNS stimulant. Amphetamines are non-catecholamine sympathomimetic amines with CNS stimulant activity. Methylphenidate appears to activate the brain stem arousal system and cortex to produce its stimulant effect and may improve cognitive function.
