Want an in-depth knowledge of carbohydrates such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, homopolysaccharides and heteropolysaccharides? If yes, then you are just one step away. Stream all these medical video lectures and many more at sqadia.com biochemistry course. This lecture specifically talks about Heteropolysaccharides. Beginning with the elaboration of mucopolysaccharides, hyaluronic acid, acid mucopolysaccharides, and heparin ae also considered.
Heteropolysaccharides are composed of amino sugars and uronic acid units. Sidra Afzal carry on the discussion by comparative elaboration of homopolysaccharides and heteropolysaccharides. Then, pictorial representation of chemical composition is given. Classification of mucopolysaccharides corresponds to neutral and acidic mucopolysaccharides. It is also informed that amino acid composition of blood group substances is peculiar.
Hyaluronic acid which is isolated from vitreous humour of eye is discussed under the title of acidic sulphate free MPS. It is composed of repeating units of N-acetyl glucosamine and D-Glucuronic acid. Another aspect discussed in this lecture is an enzyme Hyaluronidase. Biomedical importance of hyaluronidase illustrates that it increases invasive power of some pathogenic organisms. Chondroitin which is found in cornea is also reported.
Among the sulphate containing acid mucopolysaccharides (MPS), keratan sulphate is discussed initially. It is classified into Keratan SO4 I and Keratan SO4 II. Next comes the chondroitin sulphates which is a principal MPS in the ground substance of mammalian tissues and cartilage. It is further classified into Chondroitin SO4 A, Chondroitin SO4 B, Chondroitin SO4 C, and Chondroitin SO4 D.
Heparin is an anticoagulant present in the liver. Structurally, heparin is composed of Disaccharide units of D-Glucosamine (Glc N). Properties of heparin illustrates that it is strongly acidic due to sulphuric acid groups. Moreover, Sidra Afzal also talks about heparin antagonist which is strongly cationic polypeptides. Its clinical aspect is also elaborated along with heparitin sulphate.
