In this lecture ´´States of Brain Activity´´ are explained. Section one is about ´´Sleep´´. At first educator gives definition of sleep. After that types of sleep are discussed. Then REM (paradoxical, desynchronized) sleep comes under consideration. Furthermore, characteristics of REM are explained. Subsequently, information about slow-wave sleep is conveyed. Lastly, stages of sleep are pursued.
Basic Theories of Sleep
Section two is about ‘’Basic Theories of Sleep’’. In the beginning of this section, sleep: caused by an active inhibitory process is explained. Next is the elucidation of neuronal centers and neurohumoral substances. Then mechanisms that cause sleep is illustrated. Moving onward, lesions in sleep-promoting centers are presented. Afterwards, light is shed on other transmitter substances related to sleep. In the end, possible cause of REM sleep is discussed.
Sleep- Waking Cycle and Brain Waves
Section three is about ‘’Sleep- Waking Cycle and Brain Waves’’. Initially, cycle between sleep and wakefulness is reported. After that important physiological functions of sleep are highlighted. Then educator elaborates brain waves. These include alpha waves, beta waves, delta waves, and theta waves. All of these waves are discussed one after the other.
Seizures and Epilepsy
Section four is about ‘’Seizures and Epilepsy’’. First of all, seizures are explained. Then epilepsy is discussed. Classification of epilepsy is the next focus. Moreover, focal (partial) epileptic seizures are pursued. Likewise, generalized seizures are elaborated. This is followed by types of generalized seizures. Afterwards, grand – mal seizures are pursued. Lastly, absence seizures (petit mal seizures) are discussed.
Section five is about ‘’Psychotic Behavior’’. Educator starts this section by giving classification of psychosis. After that depression is discussed. Then manic-depressive psychoses come under consideration. Next subject of discussion is schizophrenia. Educator deliver information about its symptoms, causes, early sign, and treatment. Furthermore, Alzheimer’s disease is focused along with its clinical features. Coming towards conclusion, comparative explanation is given on healthy brain and Alzheimer's Brain.
